My wheel chair user accessible 1956 Ford F100 panel truck salvage body was built on a modified 1984 Riviera front wheel drive chassis by myself and ambulatory helpers over the past seven years. Air bags in place of the rear coil springs allow the rear body to kneel near the ground. A new internal bobtail rear floor allows my power wheelchair to climb past the wheel tub where I transfer into a PT Cruiser bucket seat powered forward by a Braun transfer frame. Monarch hand controls along with full GM power assists allow safe driving. Stock hung rear doors are now fastened to a top hinged tube frame powered upward by two wheel tub mounted air cylinders allowing sufficient head clearance. The chassis is quipped with: 4 wheel power disc brakes, power steering, 4 wheel independent suspension, all original GM, all rebuilt. Shortened, powder coated and reinforced, the frame has handmade frame stubs front and rear. I also used a Walker radiator, a mild .030, .010, .010 1978 403 Oldsmobile engine with 325 4L overdrive transmission and front 3.15:1 differential. Vintage air, custom exhaust, hand built fuel tank, hand built rear bumper and hand built back up light housings for the redirected 48 International KB1 parking lights were also added. I also have an installed entertainment center, but instead listen to the 403. The exterior was restored to stock Custom Cab appearance, while the interior remains incomplete. Possible system changes keep my truck a work in progress to be covered in vinyl/leather/carpet later. Color is custom mixed using only violet and yellow in a proportion that allows the color to change from cherry in bright sun to maroon at dusk. Handling and ride beat the original Cadillac, Buick and Oldsmobile mid sized front wheel drive of the chassis of origin. The four inch shorter wheelbase allows tighter turns, while full sized balanced rear air bags do a better job than the original air shocks. The before image shows early body trial on the chassis with deflated rear air bags. The first two after images show how close rear quarters get to the surface. An internally stored fold out ramp is my present project to avoid crunched quarter panels from that that first uneven parking spot. I wish great gas mileage could be reported. But, it is the quickest vehicle I have driven with hand controls. After the sound, acceleration and quick response get old, I will work on economy...
